About Us
A Project of the Guelph International Resource Centre
The Guelph Community Car Co-operative, a non-profit co-operative corporation, exists to provide cars for its members. The cars are reserved and members pay a charge per hour and kilometre. The Co-op maintains the vehicles, insures them, keeps them gassed and manages the reservation and billing systems.
The concept of carsharing has been proven in Europe and Canada, providing low cost access to a vehicle for those who other wise could not afford a car, and offering an alternative to car ownership to those who do not use a vehicle enough to justify the expense. The members enjoy the benefits of shared ownership and statistics show that the community enjoys less pollution as car ownership and usage drops. Some car shares have purchased alternative fuel vehicles to further reduce emissions and demonstrate the feasibility of their technologies.
Our members include families for which the Co-op cars are their second car, individuals who choose not to own a car, students who must manage their budgets but need to get home for a good meal, and companies who use our cars as company cars.
Each member invests $ 500 to joint the Co-operative, a share that is returned without interest if they ever leave the co-op.
